Cottonmouth Rocks - Witch Doctor
It's the broad, expansive themes at work within 'Witch Doctor' that initially peaked FDM's ears. UK's Cottonmouth Rocks on first impressions may seem like just A.Nother girl/boy outfit plying a rather scratchy lo-fi trade, yet as soon as you invest some time with this band and pick away at their murky lyrical couplets and bent song-structures you unravel a duo seemingly hell-bent on a creative mission to evoke another world.
The world they're painstakingly recreating is one of dust-bowl Americana - cheap motels, huge skies, colossal pick-ups and some pure rural hedonism. It's this pin-pointed heart to their music that drags you in and wraps you up in their rather splendid Shellac-esque lo-fi. It's messy, feral and as frail as a sheet of sodden tissue paper but when coupled with these tales of rural America each song on this double-sided single comes to life like a plaid-shirted bar-fly on his 4th tumbler of Bourbon.
